HISTORY
Poland, a Central European country situated between the major powers, Russian and Germany, has had a turbulent 1,000-year history.
Pre-Slavonic and Slavonic tribes already began settling these lands in the 15th century BC. Prehistoric evidence has been provided by, among other things, excavations at the site of a prehistoric settlement of the Lusatian culture in Biskupin, dating from c. 550 BC.
THE WAWEL DRAGON
Ina cave at the base of Wawel Hill there lived a dangerous, fire-breathing dragon w ho posed a threat to the Kraków townsfolk. The more he ate, the greater offerings he demanded until finally eh began hunting the townspeople. King Krak sent his messengers out into the world who promised a magnificent reward to anyone who could slay the dragon. Many brave knights tried but all perished in the dragon’s den. A young cobbler named Skuba living near Wawel Hill had been watching the knights in action, decided to find another way of dealing with the beast.
MASOVIA
Masovia in the early Middle Ages belonged to the Masovian tribe. Mieszko I annexed that region to the Polanian state in the l0th century. But Masovia was not incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland until 1526. In 1596, Poland's capital was moved from Kraków to Warsaw, Masovia's principal city. The most characteristic feature of the Masovia's lowland landscape is the willow. Rows of them mark the borders of fields or flower-cove-red meadows.
SILESIA
Silesia which originally belonged to Bohemia, came under the reign of the Piast princes in c. 990. Later it was ruled by Czechs, Austrians and Prussians. The region is divided into Upper Silesia, whose capital is Katowice, and Lower Silesia, whose principle city is Wrocław.
